| An Essay |
RadiantCushion is supplied specifically to address design constraints associated with the use of carpet over radiant floor heating. The two primary issues concerning carpet pad are resistance to heat flow (R-value) and durability.
As the resistance (R-value) of flooring goods employed over radiant heated floors increases, the heat output of the floor decreases given a steady supply water temperature to the floor. Flooring goods such as tile and even hardwood have relatively low R-values and are thus of low concern. However, carpet and carpet pad can have significant influence upon the performance of a radiant floor. As a rule of thumb, if the combined R-value of a carpet pad and carpet exceed R-2.5, then the heat loss of the room and the available supply water temperatures should be examined. From a practical standpoint, the use of a durable, firm, low R-value carpet pad is very important. Regarding durability, it is very important to avoid carpet pads with petrochemical-based binders (such as bonded urethane) to avoid premature degradation due to increased temperatures experienced with radiant floors.
Presently there are many carpet pads available which are either inappropriate for radiant heating or have incomplete or inaccurate technical data. RadiantCushion has an excellent certified R-value, durability, and firmness and is the most environmentally friendly pad on the market. This product will resolve the historic confusion regarding the best carpet pad for radiant floor heating. |
